A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison and a 15-year driving ban following a hit and run that resulted in the death of a teenager in Vaughan in 2024, according to York Regional Police.

In a news release shared on Tuesday, officials stated that Harnoor Chauhan from Vaughan was sentenced this week after admitting guilt in September to dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident causing death, and public mischief regarding the death of a 16-year-old.

Authorities say the teen, who was riding a mini-bike at the time of the incident, was struck by Chauhan’s Mercedes-Benz around 10:45 p. m. on May 21 of that year, near Forest Drive and Dunstan Crescent.

Chauhan left the scene, and police reported that the teen was later pronounced dead. Shortly after the crash, officers were called to another location where Chauhan claimed his vehicle had been carjacked.

“Following a thorough investigation, officers determined the carjacking was a false report and the complainant was identified as the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run,” the news release reads.

York police emphasize that road safety is a “shared responsibility” and remind all motorists of their legal and ethical duty to stay at the scene of any collision.
