A man has died after being shot multiple times in a commercial plaza in Vaughan on Monday, which police are describing as a targeted attack.
The incident took place near Weston Road and Rowntree Dairy Road, according to Const. Kevin Nebrija, spokesperson for York Regional Police. Nebrija mentioned that officers received several reports of gunfire shortly after 1 p. m.
When they arrived at the scene, outside a business, they found the man with numerous gunshot wounds, he stated. On Wednesday, police named the victim as Sergio Lopes, 65, from Richmond Hill.
York Region Paramedics reported that they transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At about the same time, Nebrija noted that police got a call about a vehicle fire in the vicinity of Kipling Avenue north of Woodbridge Avenue.
In a post on social media Monday, police indicated that the vehicle matched the description of one linked to the suspect.
“We are looking to determine if that call is in relation to the shooting investigation as a black SUV was seen fleeing the scene,” he said.
Authorities are searching for at least one suspect, Nebrija added.
The homicide unit has taken charge of this investigation. Police urge anyone with information or dashboard camera footage to reach out to them.
