A man has died after being shot multiple times in a Vaughan commercial plaza on Monday, which police are describing as a targeted event.
The incident took place near Weston Road and Rowntree Dairy Road, according to Const. Kevin Nebrija, who is the spokesperson for York Regional Police. Nebrija mentioned that officers received several calls about gunfire shortly after 1 p. m.
Upon arrival at the location, outside a business, they discovered the man with several gunshot wounds, he stated.
York Region Paramedics reported that they transported the man to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
At nearly the same time, Nebrija noted that police were alerted about a vehicle fire in the vicinity of Kipling Avenue north of Woodbridge Avenue.
In a social media update on Monday, police indicated that this vehicle fits the description of one linked to the shooting suspect.
“We are looking to determine if that call is in relation to the shooting investigation as a black SUV was seen fleeing the scene,” he explained.
Authorities are searching for at least one suspect, added Nebrija. The victim’s identity and age have not yet been disclosed.
A command post has been established close to where the shooting occurred, and residents should anticipate a significant police presence throughout Monday, he remarked.
Homicide detectives have taken charge of this case. Police encourage anyone with information or dashcam footage related to this incident to reach out to them.
