Read more Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary in Michigan on Tuesday, setting up a pitched battle to hold a Democratic Senate seat in November. El-Sayed was expected to win going into Tuesday and his victory over Congresswoman Haley Stevens did not come as a surprise to many. However, it shocked the Democratic establishment and AIPAC, D. C.’s leading Israel lobby group, which spent millions supporting her campaign due to concerns about what nominating a progressive could mean for party elections and preventing an opponent of Israel from taking that nomination. He ran as a strong progressive option in a three-way race that narrowed down in July with state senator Mallory Mc Morrow stepping aside. Mc Morrow had been viewed as someone who could appeal to both progressives and centrists but lost momentum after criticizing El-Sayed for appearing on a Twitch stream with Hasan Piker, whose comments about Israel have been deemed anti-Semitic by some. El-Sayed secured backing from influential figures within the party’s progressive wing in Congress, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren along with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Consequently, his win will energize this movement that has achieved several victories against incumbent Democrats this cycle while seeking bigger wins like statewide offices in swing states. But Michigan voters made it clear that their votes aren’t for sale; they want change. AIPAC went all in and lost,” said Green on Tuesday evening. “Abdul’s primary victory sends a signal to every other Democratic politician – if you fight powerful interests, you can win. Ironically, dark money attacks on Abdul highlighted his ‘money out of politics’ message even more clearly for voters – boosting his outsider credibility heading into the general election.” The campaign between Stevens and El-Sayed turned intensely bitter over recent weeks. Supporters of both candidates exchanged accusations regarding language used during social media exchanges that Stevens supporters like Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.) called sexist along with comments concerning Piker and El-Sayed himself viewed by some as Islamophobic.

Electability concerns loomed large throughout this race as well. Many establishment Democrats still see El-Sayed’s connections with progressives and their policies as potential hurdles he must overcome facing Mike Rogers for this seat come fall elections. Moderate incumbent Sen. Gary Peters opted not to run again this year; he endorsed Stevens late in her campaign alongside Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer – making voters’ rejection of Stevens tonight particularly significant.
A key factor contributing toward his success lay within how progressives effectively countered arguments raised by their centrist opponents during debates around electability issues connected back
