On Wednesday, Ha Nguyen Mc Neill, the acting administrator of the TSA, informed the House Committee on Homeland Security that her agency has seen a loss of 480 security officers since the shutdown started on February 14.
She highlighted the increasing financial pressure that TSA employees have faced while working without pay.
“Many in our workforce have missed bill payments, received eviction notices, had their cars repossessed and utilities shut off, lost their childcare, defaulted on loans, damaged their credit line and drained their retirement savings,” she said.
According to Mc Neill, the callout rate for TSA has jumped from its usual level of 4% to as much as 40% at some airports. Some workers are not coming in because “they simply cannot afford to report to work.”
Mc Neill stated that these high callout rates have led to the longest wait times in TSA history and might force smaller airports to close if the shutdown doesn’t come to an end soon.
