After today’s indirect discussions in Oman, the US and Iran have decided to engage in further talks following consultations with their respective capitals. Sources indicate that both sides view this as a cautiously optimistic development.

The US team was different from previous rounds of negotiations, which occurred before last year’s US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. Previously, President Donald Trump’s representative Steve Witkoff led the discussions, supported by a small team that grew over time. This time, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner participated in the talks alongside Admiral Brad Cooper, who commands US Central Command.

While Kushner’s involvement had been anticipated for some time, Cooper’s role came as a surprise to many observers. His presence is significant as it marks the first instance of a high-ranking US military official participating in indirect negotiations with Iran during Trump’s second term.

For context: The Iranians expressed frustration with Witkoff throughout last year’s conversations, and some participants believe new faces from the US could help facilitate more effective discussions. However, it’s still uncertain how these talks will progress moving forward.

The next meeting location hasn’t been finalized yet but is expected to be Oman, according to sources.

As for timing, that remains uncertain at this point. Some involved believe that slowing down the pace could lead to deeper negotiations taking place.

The White House did not respond when asked for comment.

After the conclusion of talks , the U. S. announced new sanctions targeting Iranian oil and 14 vessels transporting it , signaling its intent to maintain economic pressure.
