Vice President JD Vance has shared an offensive meme targeting Congressional Democrats who were participating in a candlelight vigil honoring those affected by the violence at the U. S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In a post on X, Vance edited images of sombreros onto a still shot of Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries along with their colleagues on Capitol steps Tuesday. The vigil was held five years after rioters attacked police officers and vandalized government property.

That day saw supporters of President Donald Trump breach the Capitol building while Congress was meeting to certify Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election. This attempt failed as they sought to reverse election results based on unfounded claims that Trump had been robbed of victory.

The meme posted by Vance seems similar to those circulated by Trump last fall. During that time, Republicans were falsely suggesting that Democrats weren’t supporting a spending bill necessary for keeping government operations running so undocumented immigrants could receive free healthcare. Vance had previously dismissed these memes as “funny.”

During his remarks at Tuesday’s vigil, Schumer stated that January 6 rioters were “egged on” by Trump.

“Five years ago, a vicious mob tried to undo American democracy,” said Schumer, who is also Senate minority leader. “Thousands of rioters, egged on by Donald Trump, stormed the U. S. Capitol, smashed its windows, desecrated its hallways, ransacked its offices in an attempt to steal the 2020 election.”

Schumer called out a new White House statement released Tuesday as containing a “maliciously false account” which blamed Capitol Police for what happened during that day.

A new webpage from Trump’s administration claimed police officers “deliberately” heightened tensions among “peaceful protesters.”

Four police officers who responded during January 6 had died by suicide within days and months following that riot according to previous reports from Reuters. One rioter named Ashli Babbitt was shot dead by an officer while trying to climb through broken glass inside of Congress’ building.

Soon after returning back into office, Trump issued pardons for about 1,500 individuals convicted due crimes related directly towards January 6 events including some who assaulted law enforcement officers.

The former president has claimed those rioters he refers as “patriots” have been unfairly treated by Justice Department officials.

While speaking at this week’s vigil event Jeffries remarked,” I have a simple message for violent mob insurrectionists: Donald Trump may have pardoned your crimes but only God can pardon your sin.”
