A wave of heavy rain hit Toronto and the surrounding GTA on Wednesday, leading to flooding on several key roads. Police are advising drivers to be extremely careful as conditions worsen.

According to Environment Canada, up to 40 millimeters of rain could accumulate by day’s end, and the heavy rainfall has already overwhelmed drainage systems in various areas of the city.

Toronto police report an increasing number of calls regarding flooded streets, including:

Gardiner Expressway at York Street Lawrence Avenue East at Railside Road Birchmount Road and Huntingwood Drive Northline Road and O’Connor Drive

Officers are urging motorists to reduce their speed, allow for extra travel time, and adapt to the slippery, waterlogged roads. In many spots, standing water has made some lanes impassable, forcing drivers to reroute or turn around.

Police warn that conditions might get worse throughout the morning and afternoon as rain persists.

For updates related to flooding, Environment Canada suggests checking with your local Conservation Authority or the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources office here for the most current information.

“Don’t drive through flooded roadways. Avoid low-lying areas. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts,” Canada’s weather agency reminded everyone on Wednesday.
