With a FIFA match and a Blue Jays game happening on Tuesday, sports fans and commuters are encouraged to use public transit and prepare for significant road closures across Toronto.

On Tuesday evening, Panama will face Croatia in the fourth FIFA match at Toronto Stadium, kicking off at 7 p. m.

Earlier that day, the Toronto Blue Jays will play against the Houston Astros at Rogers Centre, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:07 p. m.

Both events are expected to attract large crowds, so the city is bracing for a bustling evening on roads, sidewalks, and transit systems.

Huge Crowd of Croatian Fans Anticipated Downtown

Event organizers estimate that nearly 50,000 Croatian fans will be flocking to the city for the match.

There are reports that supporters might bring along a massive 100-foot Croatian flag to the stadium – similar to one displayed by fans at Dallas Stadium prior to Croatia’s game against England last week.

Because of this influx of fans, several road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place throughout downtown and nearby areas.

The Blue Jays also issued a notice to their fans about increased traffic congestion and multiple road closures around Rogers Centre.

Road Closures Throughout Downtown

Those attending the FIFA match should note that several major streets will be closed during Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Bremner Boulevard Closure

Starting at 1 p. m. until 8 p. m., Bremner Boulevard will be shut down between Lower Simcoe Street and Navy Wharf Crescent near Rogers Centre.

Fort York Neighbourhood Access Restrictions

From 10:30 a. m. until midnight, access to Fort York neighbourhood will only be allowed for local residents and businesses. The restricted area includes Bathurst Street to Strachan Avenue, as well as Fleet Street and Fort York Boulevard.

Exhibition Place and Strachan Avenue Closures

Beginning at 2 p. m. through midnight, Strachan Avenue from East Liberty Street to Lake Shore Boulevard West will be fully closed in both directions. All internal roads within Exhibition Place will also close to vehicle traffic.

Lake Shore Boulevard West Closure

Lake Shore Boulevard West is set to close completely from Bathurst Street to British Columbia Road from 2 p. m. until midnight.

To help manage traffic flow, drivers may be temporarily redirected northbound at Colborne Lodge Drive, Parkside Drive, Lower Simcoe Street, and Rees Street.

Liberty Village Access Restrictions

Access for Liberty Village residents and businesses will be limited from 2 p. m. until midnight. These restrictions affect areas south of King Street between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue as well as along Ordinance Street east of Strachan Avenue.

Fan Marches Expected to Impact Traffic

Supporters from both teams are likely to take part in organized marches toward the stadium which could lead to further traffic disruptions or temporary road closures.

Croatian fans plan on starting their march at 5:30 p. m. from the Toronto Event Centre where several events are being organized by the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce leading up to the match.
