(Photo by Vaughn Ridley/Getty Images)The Toronto Blue Jays kicked off a series against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday while still hoping for some help before the final stretch of the season. Having solid bullpen options has been essential all year, and one player in particular seemed poised to make a difference once he was back in shape. That optimism had been growing for months. Yimi Garcia had been working hard to recover from right elbow surgery he had last September and was getting closer to returning with each rehab appearance.Unfortunately, that comeback officially came to an end on Tuesday.Yimi Garcia’s Season is OverGetty Blue Jays reliever Yimi Garcia.Manager John Schneider informed reporters before Tuesday's game that Garcia underwent thoracic outlet surgery last Thursday in Dallas, which means there’s no chance for him to return in 2026. This is just another setback in what has already been a challenging rehab journey for Garcia.Garcia began his rehabilitation process in the FCL before moving up to Single-A Dunedin in early June. After just two appearances there, he advanced to Triple-A Buffalo but struggled with a 10.80 ERA and 2.40 WHIP while striking out five batters over 3.1 innings. Although his performance wasn't ideal, it still suggested he might be ready for a bullpen spot soon. Then he faced yet another issue. After his outings with Buffalo, Garcia experienced bicep soreness-an entirely different problem from his elbow issues that he'd been dealing with all year long. General manager Ross Atkins spoke about this complication at that time, expressing some hope despite the increasingly complicated situation.“Doctors have continued to be encouraged and see mostly positive signs,” Atkins said.Yimi García had thoracic outlet surgery in Dallas recently.A long, frustrating season comes to an end. It felt like García was close a half-dozen times this season, but he never got there. #Blue JaysA Disappointing Season That Ended Without Closure for the Blue JaysGarcia took the mound one more time with Dunedin on July 25 but didn't know it would be his last outing of the season at that point. The diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome put an abrupt stop to what seemed like multiple near comebacks throughout this year.Back in December 2024, Garcia signed a two-year deal worth $15 million with Toronto. With this season now behind him and free agency approaching this winter, his last pitch as a Blue Jay will likely be remembered as one thrown on July 2, 2025.Garcia’s Career StatsThroughout his career with teams like Toronto, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners, Garcia has played in 436 games and holds a record of 23-31 along with a 3.61 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. He has struck out 456 batters over 419.1 innings while keeping opponents’ batting average down to.216-stats that demonstrate he's been a dependable relief pitcher over more than ten years in baseball. This track record is precisely why Toronto's management held onto hope for his return all season long.Final Thoughts for the Blue JaysGarcia’s upcoming season is done without any chance of return that everyone had hoped for so much earlier on. The challenges kept piling up one after another until finally leading to thoracic outlet surgery ending things for him this year. What lies ahead for him in Toronto remains uncertain as free agency approaches. For now, though, the Blue Jays will need to push forward without him while they continue seeking additional bullpen strength down this crucial stretch run.
