Severe Thunderstorm Warning No Longer in Effect for Southwestern Ontario

Environment Canada has removed the tornado warning for parts of southwestern Ontario after monitoring a strong thunderstorm in the area.

The alert was issued shortly after 6 p. m. Thursday for locations including Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park, but it has now concluded.

According to Environment Canada, the storm was situated over Moraviantown and moving east at around 40 km/h.

Areas that could have been affected included Thamesville, Ridgetown, Highgate, and Rodney.

The weather agency had warned that strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall were also possible for southwestern Ontario.

The weather agency described it as “a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” in their alert, urging residents to seek shelter immediately in a basement, interior room or sturdy building.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada had put out a severe thunderstorm watch for some parts of the region, indicating conditions were right for thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts up to 90 km/h, large hail like toonies and a risk of tornadoes.

Residents are advised to keep an eye on forecasts and weather alerts as the storm moves through the area.
