OTTAWA — Tehran has designated Canada’s navy as a terrorist group in response to Ottawa’s choice so as to add an Iranian navy department to its checklist of extremist teams.

In an announcement, the Iranian Ministry of Overseas Affairs says Canada’s 2024 itemizing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity contravened worldwide legislation.

The assertion notes {that a} 2019 Iranian legislation, handed after the USA designated the IRGC as a terrorist group, authorizes reciprocal motion towards nations that comply with Washington’s lead.

It says Iran considers the Royal Canadian Navy to fall inside the scope of this legislation and, because of this, labels it a terrorist group.

The Division of Nationwide Defence referred an inquiry concerning the transfer to International Affairs Canada, however International Affairs didn’t instantly remark.

Canada says Iran has an extended historical past of denying its residents their human rights and basic freedoms, and maintains that Tehran’s actions have significantly threatened international peace and safety.
