TORONTO – Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is facing an amazing chance to boost its economy as global investors gather in Toronto for a crucial summit.

Numerous executives and asset managers from around the world are arriving in Toronto for Canada’s inaugural investment summit, eager to explore significant projects at various stages of development.

The Prime Minister’s Office later a list of attendees that includes several Canadian political figures alongside leaders from banking, business, and industry.

Speaking Sunday evening at the Royal Ontario Museum, Carney told Canadian business leaders and politicians that the world’s perspective on Canada is shifting, and it’s time for Canada to change its outlook too.

Carney also hinted that several agreements have already been finalized.

“We have what the world wants: the energy, the resources, the talent, the technology and the capital,” Carney said.

“And our greatest strength is something that cannot be found on any balance sheet: trust,” he mentioned, seemingly taking a dig at U. S. President Donald Trump.

Attendees included Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez and Canada’s chief trade commissioner, Sara Wilshaw.

The summit plays a key role in Carney’s strategy to generate $1 trillion in investments for Canada over the next five years.

Carney stated that while those present may not always see eye to eye – nor do they need to – they all share a common vision for Canada’s future.

“There is a new consensus from Iqaluit to Victoria to Quebec City and St. Johns: Canada is taking control of our future,” he declared. “We will build more, we will trade more with each other and the world, and we will create more sustainable prosperity here at home.”

A source familiar with upcoming events but not authorized to speak publicly confirmed to The Canadian Press that former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper will provide closing remarks at the summit.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford mentioned invitees come from Kuwait, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore, Qatar, Norway, Japan and Australia.

He noted there are 15 major projects available in Ontario including energy production and transmission, critical minerals and mining, AI and advanced manufacturing.

“We are building an economy that can compete with anyone, anywhere. That’s going to be my message throughout the Canada Investment Summit,” Ford remarked.

“Ontario has what the world needs and we’re going to make sure everyone knows it.”

While Ford and Carney promoted the summit as an investment opportunity for Canada, civil society groups argue they’re aligning with business leaders who contribute to global crises.

Demonstrators including labor unions, Indigenous leaders along with climate and housing advocates plan to mobilize Monday carrying a banner stating “The Many vs. The Money” while intending “direct intervention” with attendees.

The organizers expressed their disapproval of Carney’s approach which puts Canada’s economic future into corporate hands. They voiced concerns regarding public services’ futures along with pipelines and arms manufacturing issues.

This report by The Canadian Press was first Sept. 13, 2026.
