A 23-year-old man from Tillsonburg is facing several charges after police say he approached multiple people while holding a firearm and asking them for money.
This incident happened around 6:30 a. m. on Monday, leading to a heavier police presence along King Street near 1st Street, right outside the OPP’s Oxford County detachment.
One individual was taken into custody without any issues; thankfully, no property was stolen from the victims, and no one sustained physical injuries, according to police reports.
The authorities requested that the public steer clear of the area during their investigation.
The suspect, who has only been identified as a 23-year-old from Tillsonburg, faces three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He also faces two counts each of armed robbery, disguise with intent, carrying a concealed weapon, and using a firearm in committing an offence.
Additionally, he is charged with one count of failing to comply with a release order. As of Friday afternoon, he remained in custody and was waiting for his bail hearing.
No further details will be released at this time, according to police statements.
“We recognize that these types of calls are very unsettling in our communities,” said Insp. Tony Hymers, commander of the Oxford County detachment.
“Our commitment is to continue to react as quickly as possible, as seen today, to safely stop these crimes from continuing. Apprehending suspects and offering support for victims is paramount in helping to keep Oxford County safe and feeling supported.”
