The annual march highlights issues of gender-based violence.
TILLSONBURG – It’s time to join the Take Back the Night event in Oxford County.
This year, Tillsonburg is hosting the annual Take Back the Night March. The event rotates between Woodstock, Ingersoll, and Tillsonburg each year.
Sophie Foster, who is the Public Education and Fundraising Coordinator at Ingamo Homes and also part of the Domestic Abuse Resource Team of Oxford County (DART Oxford), mentions that everyone will meet at the clock tower on Bridge Street West.
“If you come to the clock tower in Tillsonburg around 6:30 p. m., we’ll have tables set up so you can create your own poster and make your own signs. At 6:45 p. m., we’ll hear some speeches along with a poem from a local poet which should be fantastic.”
She adds that the march will kick off at 7:00 p. m.
“We’ll take a 20 to 25 minute walk around Tillsonburg where we’ll chant with megaphones and noisemakers. The goal is to take back the night.”
The closing ceremony will start at 7:45 p. m.
Take Back the Night is a worldwide initiative that started in the 1970s. Women felt unsafe walking alone at night, prompting communities across the globe to hold marches during the third week of September to bring attention to gender-based violence.
