A smile lights up Michael Grubb’s face when he talks about his family’s rescue dog.
The franchise owner of Tillsonburg’s Pet Valu, Grubb and his family welcomed ‘Nala’ into their home last year.
“Her mom was left in a park fully breached with seven pups, sitting on that line of maybe not making it,” Gubb shared. “She was picked up by a rescue that was able to save the mom’s life and the seven pups.”
With Nala now doing well, Gubb and his wife/franchise partner Allison Diagre-Grubb will host an adoption event for up to 20 dogs and cats at the store on July 25 and 26.
Currently being cared for by the North Bay and District Humane Society, the animals will be transported by the North Bay Animal Rescue & Relief Transport.

They’ll travel in style aboard a customized 24-foot trailer and truck fitted with comfortable, modern cages and air conditioning thanks to two Companions for Change sponsorships, one from 2018 and another from 2024, totaling $131,000 from Pet Valu.
North Bay and District Humane Society shelter manager Janet Bredin described their location as a ‘hub’ for animals from across northern regions and beyond.
“We get pets from local areas, just outside our service zones, but we also deal with southern Kentucky, northern Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec,” Bredin noted. “So the pets we bring down to these adoption events come from various places; it’s a bit of a mix.”
“Typically, we bring them all into the North Bay Humane Society for initial vet checks,” she explained. “We ensure their health, behavior, temperament-all that meets our standards for adoption events.”
To celebrate this occasion, the Grubbs have arranged for an ice cream truck to join in. They’re inviting not only those looking to adopt but also current pet owners to enjoy some fun festivities along with treat bags for their furry friends.
“It touches the heart – it’s a great event for us,” Grubb said.
“It’s super exciting! I hope many people are eager about it so we can find lots of homes for these animals.”
The Pet Valu in Tillsonburg is located at 400 Simcoe Street in Norfolk Mall. The adoption event will take place between 9 a. m. -5 p. m. on July 25 and from 10 a. m.-1 p. m. on July 26.
By adopting or donating, residents can support Ontario’s animal workers who continue their vital efforts. Bredin mentioned that due to wildfires in northern Ontario they’ve already taken in several dogs as a precautionary measure-and expect this practice might continue while fires persist.
“Many communities have been struggling or facing challenges lately,” she said.
“Last week we didn’t take in large numbers from northern communities (but) we do anticipate being able to help out.”
