Ontario is launching a second round of funding for its Rural Ontario Development Program, and this time, the city of Thunder Bay and local organizations can apply.
During this week’s 2026 Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference, representatives from the City of Thunder Bay, the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC), and the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce urged the Ministry of Rural Affairs to broaden the eligibility requirements for funding.
The program has $20 million available for municipalities, Indigenous groups, service providers, non-profits, and small businesses aimed at enhancing economic conditions in rural areas and northern Ontario.
This development program offers support for economic diversification, workforce growth, infrastructure initiatives, and building local capacity.
Mayor Ken Boschcoff responded positively to the announcement: “including Thunder Bay reflects an understanding of our regional realities and the importance of supporting economic growth across Northern Ontario.”
