Airlines in northern Ontario are advocating for subsidies to make air travel more affordable in the area.

They’re proposing the Northern Ontario Airfare Affordability Program, inspired by a similar initiative in Quebec.

Tom Meilleur, vice-president of North Star Air, states it would need $40 million each year from the government.

“So that gives the traveler, at the time of booking, as in the Quebec model, 60 to 75% discount, which would allow for individuals to stay connected.”

Meilleur adds that with such a discount, ticket prices could drop to around $125-$150 in certain areas.

He mentions that they’ve received positive feedback during discussions with the government but still need to persuade the Premier about its necessity.
