A program that supports the forestry industry in northwestern Ontario has just received new funding from the provincial government.
This week, the province announced it would provide $1.5 million to the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre’s Boreal Springboard program, which aims to help businesses in the local forestry sector expand.
The funds are coming from the province’s Trade-Impacted Communities Program.
The Boreal Springboard program features two streams: one is an accelerator where entrepreneurs building forest-related businesses can receive up to $40,000 in support along with assistance in business and product development.
The second stream is called Soft-Landing, which focuses on helping established companies from outside the area expand their operations in northwestern Ontario.
“Northwestern Ontario’s forest sector is a major economic driver, supported by skilled workers innovative businesses and a strong manufacturing base,” said Kevin Holland, MPP for Thunder Bay-Atikokan, and Minister of Forestry and Forest Products. “Through our government’s Trade-Impacted Communities Program, we are helping forestry and wood-product businesses respond to the impacts of U. S. tariffs, attract new investment and pursue new opportunities that strengthen our local supply chains and grow northwestern Ontario’s forest sector.”
