A lottery ticket that was left on a kitchen table turned out to be a huge winner in Ontario.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation announced Wednesday that Thunder Bay resident Ida Chow won $500,000 from a maxmillions prize in the Dec. 19 Lotto Max draw.

The 61-year-old retiree said she has been playing the lottery since she moved to Canada from Hong Kong in 1992, with Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 becoming part of her weekly routine.

“I bought my ticket before Christmas and left it on the kitchen table. I usually don’t check my tickets for several weeks,” Chow said.

“I checked this ticket using the OLG app and couldn’t believe it.”

Chow was handed her cheque one month after the draw, on Jan. 19.

After she discovered the big win, she told her sister the news over the phone.

With the winnings, Chow said she wants to visit her family in Hong Kong and celebrate with them.

“I’d also like to move to Toronto to be with my friends,” she said.

The winning ticket was bought in Thunder Bay at Shoppers Drug Mart on Arthur Street East.

“I never thought I’d win a prize like this,” Chow said.
