Officers say prolific gang exercise is the reason for havoc and disruptions in buildings throughout the town.

THUNDER BAY — Following two high-profile incidents of violence in the identical week at DSSAB-owned house buildings, the chair of the District of Thunder Bay Social Companies Administration Board desires to reassure the general public that they’re actively searching for methods to enhance security for residents.

Board chair Brian Hamilton stated the DSSAB is heading to the Rural Ontario Municipal Affiliation on Monday to make a critical and “vigorous” ask for help following these incidents.

A murder on Tuesday and a weapons incident early Friday  each occurred at DSSAB house buildings.

“Various the residents that we wish to take away are being disruptive. We won’t get individuals out as a result of the (Landlord Tenant Board) caseload is an excessive amount of,” stated Hamilton.

The DDSAB has requested provincial ministries for years to make adjustments on the Landlord and Tenant Board to correctly safe buildings, he stated.

“The legal professional basic has assured us (final yr) that some adjustments are occurring there,” stated Hamilton.

“We’re engaged on that, however typically it is taking months to get individuals out of housing, those who both want help or are creating disruption for all the opposite residents.”

He stated all it takes is one or two unhealthy tenants to actually stigmatize a constructing and create a actual or a perceived lack of security for residents.

“We actually do not need to stigmatize, as a result of even in a difficult constructing 99 per cent of the residents are doing the best factor. They’re nice neighbours, they’re minding their very own enterprise they usually’ve been wonderful tenants,” stated Hamilton.

“However there may be that phase of the society once more that require helps they usually have to be in a social or transitional surroundings. For now, they’re in social housing and perhaps missing the company to guard themselves from exploitation from exterior sources like gangs.”

Police haven’t indicated presently whether or not they suspect both of the latest incidents was gang-related, each investigations are ongoing.

Within the meantime, Hamilton stated the DSSAB has quite a few initiatives on the go to mediate a few of these points.

“The brand new strategic plan of the DSSAB board, beginning in 2022, actually amplified a whole lot of the safety presence and a whole lot of our models, however I feel most significantly is we’re advocating strongly to be sure that we now have residents which are supported the place they dwell as a result of individuals are all too simply exploited in these conditions,” stated Hamilton.

Even with safety measures enhanced over the past couple of years, he stated, there isn’t any mechanism to 100 per cent assure security, particularly when fortifying in opposition to residents keen to use others’ conditions.

These safety issues will not be distinctive to social housing, stated Hamilton, however are true for a lot of buildings throughout Thunder Bay and throughout elsewhere in Ontario.

Hamilton stated the DSSAB is searching for a province-wide technique for supportive housing.

“Individuals are extremely migratory. We do not simply want a Thunder Bay mannequin. We in the end want a province-wide mannequin that could possibly be adopted. Somebody who could possibly be right here and desires helps might have been in Kenora a number of weeks in the past… or at any municipality throughout the North,” stated Hamilton.

He stated DSSAB wants assist from the ministries and can’t do that alone.

“Each time we now have an incident like this, it solely amplifies our message and allows us to convey that message somewhat bit stronger,” stated Hamilton.
