A taxi driver was attacked while working in St. Catharines early on Friday morning.

Authorities received a call after the driver arrived at the emergency room of St. Catharines Hospital with stab wounds around 1:45 a. m. on Friday, Jan. 16, according to Niagara Regional Police.

The male taxi driver informed the police that a passenger had stabbed him.

Officers mentioned they found a weapon on Welland Canal Parkway in St. Catharines, just south of Glendale Avenue.

The driver is being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening and is recovering in the hospital, police stated.

Two individuals have been arrested by police, who added that they do not think there is any ongoing threat to public safety.

Daniel Ibarra Vargas, 29, from Thorold, faces charges of aggravated assault and making threats.

Vargas is currently in custody and has a bail hearing set for Friday.

The second suspect was released without any conditions.

The area on Welland Canal Parkway has been processed and is now open again.
