Update on the January 26 Storm: Parking Restrictions Continue

City facilities are expected to reopen with regular hours on Monday, except for the St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre, which will have a delayed opening.

As City crews carry on with winter operations, the only update as of Sunday evening heading into Monday, Jan. 26, is that St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre will open at 7:30 a. m. Please check our social media and website for any additional updates on facility and programming changes on Tuesday morning.

Winter parking ban in effect

Due to the current weather conditions and forecasts, City officials have declared a significant weather event as of 10:30 a. m. today. A winter parking ban started at 6 p. m. on Sunday. This means no on-street parking in most neighborhoods during winter storms to keep roads clear for plows, emergency vehicles, and public transit. Residents should plan to keep their cars off the street for at least 72 hours while local weather and road conditions dictate how long these restrictions last.

Residents need to move their vehicles off the street to avoid fines or towing. Non-compliance may result in a $40 ticket and towing fees at the owner’s expense. Some areas like parts of downtown, Merritton, and Port Dalhousie are exempt due to limited off-street parking availability. If residents need alternative parking options, they can look for an exemption area, use one of the City’s parking garages or check with neighbors or family members about using their driveway.

Winter operations update

As of Sunday at 11 p. m., Environment Canada has issued an orange snowfall warning for our area, predicting snow through early Monday morning. We advise residents to avoid traveling if possible and exercise extreme caution if you must be out on roads or sidewalks.

Crews have been working continuously since early Sunday morning and will continue throughout the night into Monday morning. Depending on snowfall amounts and wind conditions, they aim to clear primary routes overnight before focusing on secondary residential roads by Monday morning if possible.

Our teams have been working around 16 hours but face challenges due to ongoing snowfall and winds; we appreciate your patience as we work through this situation.
