A 45-year-old man from Simcoe has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with a homicide investigation that started in October, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Barbara Morgan, aged 71, was found dead at her home on Head Street South in Simcoe on the morning of October 5, police reported. A post-mortem examination later confirmed that her death was a homicide.

Her son, Justin Morgan, who also lives in Simcoe, was taken into custody on October 10 and initially charged with second-degree murder.

On the same day, officers searched a residence on Stanley Street in Simcoe after expressing concern for a 49-year-old man named Robert Sykes. He had been last seen on Head Street South on October 4 and was missing.

By October 16, investigators discovered human remains in an area west of Caledonia and south of Stirling Street in Haldimand County. The Ontario Forensic Pathology Service conducted a post-mortem examination the next day and identified the remains as belonging to Sykes.

This past Thursday, authorities upgraded Morgan’s charges to first-degree murder. His previous charge of second-degree murder has also been changed to first-degree murder.

The accused is currently being held in custody and is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on Friday, police stated.
