A 45-year-old man from Simcoe has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder related to a homicide investigation that started in October, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Barbara Morgan, 71, was discovered deceased in a residence on Head Street South in Simcoe on the morning of October 5, police reported. A post-mortem examination concluded that her death was a homicide.
Morgan’s son, Justin Morgan, who also resides in Simcoe, was arrested on October 10 and initially charged with second-degree murder, police stated.
On the same day, authorities searched a property on Stanley Street in Simcoe due to concerns for the safety of Robert Sykes, 49. He had been unaccounted for since being last seen on Head Street South on October 4.
On October 16, investigators found human remains in an area west of Caledonia and south of Stirling Street in Haldimand County. A subsequent post-mortem examination at the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service confirmed the remains were those of Sykes.
Police announced that as of Thursday, Morgan has been charged with first-degree murder. The earlier second-degree murder charge was also elevated to first-degree murder.
The accused is currently held in custody and was set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on Friday, as per police reports.
