Investigation Ongoing After Hog Farm Fire

Two weeks after a fire at a giant pig barn in Norfolk County killed thousands of pigs and caused millions of dollars in damage, the cleanup is still underway and some key questions remain unanswered.

Who owns the barn?

The 4.5-acre hog barn on Highway 3 between Simcoe and Delhi – larger than three football fields and thought to be among the largest of its kind in the province – is owned by Mae-Mart Farms, a seventh-generation Waterford-based livestock and grain operation that operates several pig barns in Norfolk and once boasted of having the largest single-storey chicken barn in Canada, with room for 55,000 broiler chickens.

Reached by email, Mae-Mart Farms president Philip Wiedrick declined to be interviewed.

“At this point, we are focused on our family, our employees, and beginning the long process of recovery,” Wiedrick told The Spectator, directing all questions to Ontario Pork, the industry group representing the province’s pork producers.

“The support our family has received from our community and the agricultural sector has meant a great deal during this incredibly difficult time,” Wiedrick added.

How many pigs died?

That is still unclear, though the barn could hold more than 20,000 pigs and the death toll is thought to be in the thousands. Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (still commonly known by its former name, OMAFRA) deferred to Ontario Pork, but a spokesperson for the industry group declined to get into specifics about the loss of livestock.

“Our focus continues to be on supporting the family as they navigate the recovery process,” communications manager Julie Klack said in an email declining an interview request “out of respect for everyone affected and the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Did any pigs escape?

No pigs escaped as the wind whipped through flames that engulfed the sprawling structure on July 14. Fifty firefighters responded quickly to fight back against it while bringing water from hydrants located in Simcoe to this rural area.

Ontario Pork did not comment on how exactly the barn was designed or laid out – including whether there were sprinklers or other fire safety measures installed – but generally speaking pig barns have many gated pens and divided sections which make it tough to quickly remove animals during emergencies.

What was the damage?

The farm pegged its losses at $30 million according to reports from firefighters. The business does have insurance coverage.

What does cleaning up involve?

According to provincial law , farms must properly dispose of deceased animals-also referred to as deadstock-within two days. This can happen through burial , incineration , composting , or taking them to an appropriate disposal facility. This deadline aims at preventing disease spread , contamination of water sources , or release greenhouse gases like methane as carcasses break down.

In special cases where fires leave farms with lots of deadstock suddenly , they can request an exemption from that two-day requirement. An OMAFRA representative confirmed that Mae-Mart Farms applied for-and received-“emergency authorization” allowing them extra time for removal processes. Technical experts from their ministry were brought in alongside Ontario Pork for “the appropriate disposal of deadstock,” although what exactly that looks like remains unclear here.

Was there environmental damage?

An environmental compliance officer from Ontario was sent out for evaluation. The inspector found that most water used during firefighting efforts-which amounted up to approximately three point five million litres according to firefighters-was contained safely within manure pits under where animals lived so thankfully nothing leaked into local drinking supplies. However Norfolk County did issue an air quality warning due smoke drifting all way over towards Jarvis which sits around twenty kilometers eastward nearby here.

Was this considered factory farming?

Ontario Pork insists no swine raised across Ontario exist under conditions deemed “factory farms”, emphasizing rather these operations retain family ownership overall.
