Landbell Canada has launched a free drop-off service for recyclable materials at Norfolk County’s old sorting facility located at 28 Grigg Dr. in Simcoe. Jacob Robinson jpeg, SR, apsmc

The location of Norfolk County’s past sorting facility is now home to a free drop-off area for recyclables.

Landbell Canada revealed this month that it has set up large recycling drop-off bins at 28 Grigg Dr. in Simcoe. The site is open Monday through Friday from 7 a. m. to 3:30 p. m., and it accepts glass, aluminum, paper, and plastic from residents of the Norfolk area.

According to its website, Landbell is recognized globally as a leader in producer responsibility organizations and aims to empower businesses and consumers to positively affect the environment.

Tim Peel, Landbell’s Canadian operations manager, referred to the site as a “supplementary collection depot for Blue Box materials originating from residents in Simcoe and surrounding areas.”

“Working with a local recycling facility in Simcoe, we are operating this depot collection service at no cost to residents,” Peel said. “It is one measure for us to assist a community with residential Blue Box recycling as well as support a local recycling business.”

The depot will be unavailable for local businesses since Ontario’s new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) model requires small business owners to arrange private collection services themselves.

“The current model for recycling in Ontario obligates companies (referred to as producers) with packaging and paper products put on the market to absorb the full cost of Blue Box recycling services,” Peel said. “These producers hire Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) to provide collection management and administrative services that help them meet their regulatory obligations under the Blue Box Program.”

Simcoe marks Landbell’s second depot location; the first was established 13 months ago in Belleville.

The site accepts glass, rigid plastics (like clear food containers and shampoo bottles), metal (including pop cans and baking tins), paper, and polystyrene (such as foam plates/cups or protective packaging).

Please note that certain items aren’t accepted at the new depot including:

PPE waste; household hazardous material; plastic packing (takeout containers flower pots liners for cereal bubble wrap pet food bags); squeeze tubes (toothpaste lotion); paint cans; CDs/DVDs; drinking glasses cups crystal ceramics pottery; window glass; light bulbs; mirrors; pots pans or metal such as tools; automotive parts appliances electronics; aluminum (chip bags metallic gift wrap); textiles; paper products like tissues napkins paper towels; cables ropes hoses; wood products or renovation waste like window frames kitchen counters drywall bathtubs.
