Firefighters in Norfolk County believe at least 20,000 hogs have perished in a barn fire that started Tuesday morning in Ontario.

According to officials from the Norfolk County Fire Department, three fire stations were dispatched to the blaze on Highway 3, just outside Simcoe, around 6:45 a. m. on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, crews found that the entire barn, which is about 200,000 square feet large, was fully engulfed in flames, said James Robertson, Deputy Fire Chief of Norfolk County, in a news release.

The firefighting teams stayed on site well into the afternoon while battling hot and humid weather to control the fire. At its peak intensity, Robertson reported that eight stations with 40 firefighters and 15 pieces of equipment were present.

No injuries have been reported among farm workers or firefighters; however, it’s estimated that at least 20,000 hogs lost their lives in this incident.

Robertson noted that there’s currently no indication that foul play is involved.

Residents nearby are being advised by Norfolk County to stay indoors as smoke spreads throughout the area, affecting visibility and air quality.

The OPP announced around 10 a. m. that Highway 3 is closed between Charlotteville East Quarter Line and Windham East Quarter Line Road.

Norfolk County Fire Department Deputy Chief James Robertson mentioned that firefighting efforts are expected to last several hours. Norfolk County Fire Department
