Efforts are already in full swing to organize the festivities for Goderich’s 200th anniversary.
The Town will celebrate its Bicentennial in 2027, and a volunteer committee has been diligently planning the weekend celebrations for several months.
Committee chair Councillor Liz Petrie mentioned that selecting the weekend of June 24-27, 2027, was their first major decision.
“Choosing a date took us a couple of meetings because once summer starts, it is a very busy community here in Goderich,” she said. “We chose this weekend since it’s the start of summer, the end of school.. plus Founder’s Day is actually on June 29. That’s when John Galt came here and established the town, so we thought getting as close to that date as possible would be ideal.”
The committee also finalized a logo after hosting a contest last month. Petrie expressed excitement about the high level of participation, selecting Mike Zarytshansky’s design as the winner.
“I was very, very impressed, as was the committee, with having received 41 submissions,” she said. “We selected a winner-a gentleman who designed an image featuring the lighthouse, sunset, and Octagon (the Square): all elements that make you recognize it’s Goderich when you see the logo.”
The committee has also chosen a slogan: “making waves since 1827.”
Even though the celebration is more than 15 months away, the committee is organizing events throughout next year to share lesser-known tales from the town’s past to build interest leading up to the big event.
Plans include a podcast series with Phil Main and a play in collaboration with Livery Theatre along with a legacy project that they’re keeping under wraps for now.
Petrie noted that her team has been doing excellent work preparing for next year.
“I’m really impressed with this group; they work hard and come up with great ideas while having meaningful discussions about specific details,” she said. “I’m very proud of this group and we’re looking for one more person to apply so we’ll be well-rounded moving forward.”
Applications to join the committee need to be submitted by Friday at 4 p. m.
