Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning that regions near Lake Erie will be impacted by a huge winter storm expected to bring tough conditions to 30 states across the U. S. this weekend.

Some weather experts in America are referring to this system, which spans a large portion of the continental U. S., as “a generational storm.”

“It’s a very, very large system,” said Meteorologist Eric Thomlinson. “It will intensify as it taps into that Gulf [of Mexico] moisture, and with all of that moisture that it’s picking up, it has quite a large area of precipitation, and it’s the northern edge that could impact us.”

People in the U. S. are getting ready for severe cold, rain, freezing rain, and snow.

Thomlinson believes the effects in Southwestern Ontario won’t be as severe but mentioned that forecasts indicate frigid temperatures for Friday and Saturday, along with snow on Sunday.

“Seeing as the system is passing south of Ontario, areas closer to Lake Erie, as well as the Greater Toronto Area, those are the areas that we’re really watching for those higher snowfall amounts,” said Thomlinson, suggesting places like Windsor and Chatham-Kent could get around 10 cm of snow.

He noted that predictions are still uncertain; however, they should have a clearer idea about potential impacts on Friday.

The current models show that overnight temperatures on Friday might plummet to -21 C.

As we move into early next week, Thomlinson said there would be a slight increase in temperature but not much. He forecasted daytime highs ranging between -5 C and -10 C.
