Kawartha Lakes OPP are looking into a drowning event that took place on Tuesday evening after a canoe flipped over on Balsam Lake.

On Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at around 6:21 p. m., officers answered a marine call regarding Balsam Lake, where they learned that a man in a canoe had fallen overboard and did not resurface. The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP (including the marine unit), along with members of the OPP Emergency Response Unit searched the waters thoroughly but couldn’t find the individual before night fell.

On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit helped in recovery efforts and located the body of a 75-year-old from North York at about 1:30 p. m.

The investigation is still ongoing.

OPP are dedicated to educating boaters, conducting marine patrols/enforcing laws, and saving lives across more than 110,000 square kilometres of Ontario waterways. With capsized boats and falling overboard being major causes of boating fatalities each year, many lives could be saved if boaters, personal watercraft users, and paddlers wore lifejackets or personal flotation devices.
