The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) has introduced its latest accessibility plan called Every Door Open.

This initiative aims to enhance the accessibility, inclusiveness, and warmth of school and workplace settings for students, staff, families, and visitors.

The board stated that its revised plan “reflects its dedication to meeting and exceeding Ontario’s accessibility requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Ontario Human Rights Code, and related legislation.”

Since 2022, the LKDSB has implemented several improvements such as assessing schools for barriers and making necessary repairs to sidewalks, entrances, and restrooms.

They have also installed features like elevators, ensured safer building access, and updated transportation policies.

Beyond physical spaces, the board has worked on making practices more inclusive regarding student transitions, field trips, hiring processes, and customer service. They also provide staff with ongoing training on accessibility and human rights.

Director of Education Gary Girardi noted that while significant strides have been made in accessibility efforts, this work is ongoing and continuously evolving. “We are deeply committed to moving forward with transparency, purpose, and accountability,” said Girardi. “Every Door Open is an important guide that helps us stay focused on creating safe, inclusive, and barrier-free spaces for every individual who learns, works, and visits our schools. This responsibility is integral to who we are as a public school board.”

Girardi emphasized that ensuring accessibility isn’t just a one-time effort.

“It is a commitment embedded in every decision we make, every space we enhance, and every interaction within our system,” he said. “We want all members of our community to feel welcome, supported, and valued when they walk through our doors.”

Looking ahead over the next three years, the LKDSB plans to focus on improving hiring practices for staff support to be more inclusive while ensuring all new schools’ construction upgrades and playgrounds meet full accessibility standards.

They also aim to enhance digital tools by adhering to high accessibility standards online while increasing support for accessible transportation options as well as individualized student plans.

You can find more details including the full document on the LKDSB’s website.
