A one-and-a-half-year-old boy has lost his life, and several others have been hurt after a vehicle crashed into a child care centre in Richmond Hill, Ont., on Wednesday afternoon.

York Regional Police reported that a car went through the window of the building close to Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive around 3 p. m., hitting multiple staff members and young children.

“The centre was open at the time, with numerous employees and children inside,” Const. Kevin Nebrija stated on Wednesday evening.

Seven kids aged between 1.5 and three years old were struck by the vehicle, along with three staff members. A 1.5-year-old boy was declared dead, while another child is in serious condition, according to police reports.

The other children and staff who were hit sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

York Regional Police said a man in his 70s was arrested at the scene, but they currently believe this was an unfortunate accident.

“Information right now has led us to determine this was not a deliberate act,” Nebrija said.

“The vehicle was in the parking lot at the time and, for reasons unknown, drove through the front of the window. We can appreciate that this is a very alarming call for parents to receive.”

All children and staff were accounted for, police confirmed.

“My thoughts are with the children, employees and families impacted by this devastating incident. No family should have to deal with a tragedy like this,” said York Regional Police chief Jim Mac Sween.
