A one-and-a-half-year-old child has lost their life and several others sustained injuries after a vehicle crashed through the window of a daycare in Richmond Hill, Ont., on Wednesday afternoon.

York Regional Police reported that a car drove into the building near Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive around 3 p. m., hitting multiple staff members and young children.

“The centre was open at the time, with numerous employees and children inside,” Const. Kevin Nebrija explained on Wednesday evening.

Seven children aged between 1.5 and three years old were struck by the vehicle, along with three staff members. A 1.5-year-old boy was pronounced dead, while another child is in serious condition, according to police.

The other children and staff who were hit have injuries that are not life-threatening.

York Regional Police mentioned that a man in his 70s was arrested at the scene; however, they currently believe this incident was an unfortunate accident.

“Information right now has led us to determine this was not a deliberate act,” Nebrija said.

“The vehicle was in the parking lot at the time and, for reasons unknown, drove through the front of the window. We can appreciate that this is a very alarming call for parents to receive.”

All children and staff were accounted for, police said.

“My thoughts are with the children, employees and families impacted by this devastating incident. No family should have to deal with a tragedy like this,” said York Regional Police chief Jim Mac Sween.
