A pedestrian has died and another person is facing life-threatening injuries following a collision between two vehicles in Richmond Hill on Thursday, with one vehicle hitting three people who were on a sidewalk, according to police.

The incident took place at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Leslie Street, as reported by York Regional Police. Officers received calls about the crash at 4:10 p. m.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that three pedestrians had been struck, said Staff Sgt. Stephen Mc Kenzie from York Regional Police. The individuals were on the sidewalk rather than waiting in a nearby bus shelter, he noted.

One pedestrian, a 65-year-old man from Vaughan, was declared dead at the scene. A second pedestrian was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries while the third was taken for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Next of kin are being informed, but police have decided not to release details about the victims out of respect for their families, he stated.

Mc Kenzie mentioned that the collision also knocked down a light standard; however, it had been re-erected by the time CBC Toronto arrived at the scene on Friday.

He did not have information regarding how fast the vehicles were traveling and added there’s no indication that impaired driving played a role in the incident.

Both drivers remained at the scene after the crash, he confirmed.

“Our investigation is ongoing and in its early stages and at this time no further details are available,” Mc Kenzie said.

A Witness’s Close Call

Endre Teleki, who saw the accident unfold, described how a speeding car coming from Major Mackenzie Drive entered the intersection with Leslie Street and collided with another vehicle. He mentioned that he called 911 immediately afterward.

Teleki stated he was about 15 meters away when it happened and jumped over a barrier to avoid getting hit.

“There was a huge crash. I had to jump out of the way so I didn’t get hit by the car,” Teleki said.

“I’m still kind of shocked,” he remarked. “It was going crazy speed.”

The major collision investigation unit is now handling this case and is examining all factors that may have contributed to it.

If anyone witnessed what happened or has relevant dashboard camera footage, they’re encouraged to contact police.
