Nearly 100 people came together Monday evening to remember the victims of a tragic house fire that is believed to be arson in Richmond Hill.
The fire, which took place near Skywood Drive and Rollinghill Road, resulted in two fatalities and left three others in critical condition. Firefighters, police, and paramedics responded to the scene shortly before 3 a. m. on Sept. 1.
York Regional Police reported that the two individuals who lost their lives in the hospital after the fire were an 11-year-old girl and a 24-year-old woman, identified as Helya Bahari-Kashani of Richmond Hill. They have been deemed victims of homicide.
The vigil attracted family members, friends, and community residents at French Royalist Park, located near the site of the incident.

Victim remembered as ‘absolutely lovely person’
Freya Abbas attended high school with Bahari-Kashani and recalled her as a positive, kind, and friendly individual. “She really had a positive outlook on the world, so that’s something that I will try to continue as well. That’s something that I really look up to her for,” she told CBC on Monday. Sophia Wan was also a high school classmate of Bahari-Kashani’s where they participated in drama classes together. “Helya was an absolutely lovely person,” she said. “She’s probably one of the sweetest and most lovely people I’ve ever met.” Wan mentioned she would like to remember Bahari-Kashani through her acting talent and kindness. “She always saw the good in people and wanted the best for them,” Wan stated. Police indicated there are no new updates regarding the investigation at this time. Richmond Hill Mayor David West was present at the vigil to pay his respects. “When something like this happens, it happens to all of us. This is exactly how we get through times like this,” West remarked. A Go Fund Me page has been created to assist the family during this difficult time.
