Authorities have named the 54-year-old man who lost his life in “an unprovoked attack” in Richmond Hill, and a 23-year-old suspect has been charged in connection with the case.

Officers were called to an assault near Lorraine Street and Bernard Avenue on Wednesday, where they found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries, according to a news release from York Regional Police (YRP) on Thursday.

Amir Shafei of Richmond Hill was declared dead at the hospital due to blunt force trauma, police reported.

The statement identified a 23-year-old suspect from Richmond Hill, who “was arrested without incident” near the location of the attack.

The suspect faces charges of second-degree murder along with two counts of breach of probation, police stated.

On Thursday, Const. Kevin Nebrija said, “The victim was outside of his residence when he was attacked without provocation by the suspect.”

He mentioned that investigators believe the attack was indeed unprovoked and that neither person knew each other prior to this event.

“For reasons unknown, the suspect attacked the victim just for no rhyme or reason,” he said.

“This is an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety right now.”

Nebrija noted that police are not seeking any additional suspects at this time.

If anyone has information or video footage from the area, they are encouraged to reach out to York Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
