A shelter-in-place order that was active for four hours overnight in Renfrew, Ont., has been lifted, but a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman Thursday night is still at large, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Police reported that a woman went to a local hospital Thursday and claimed she had been held against her will and sexually assaulted at a motel on Stewart Street.

The woman stated that the suspect, who she knows, was armed with a handgun.

Authorities later spotted the suspect, but he ran into the Algonquin Trail. Despite a search involving various OPP units including canine teams, they couldn’t find him.

“While there was believed to be no threat to the general public, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the area just after 9:00 p. m. out of an abundance of caution,” OPP said in a news release. The order was lifted at 1 a. m.

The man is described as Black, standing between five-feet-nine-inches and six feet tall, with shaved sides on his head. He had a goatee and two tattoos: one five-star tattoo above his left eyebrow and another tattoo under his left eye. He was last seen wearing a purple plaid jacket, black shorts and a blue shirt.

OPP mentioned that they are seeking an arrest warrant for the man and are encouraging him to turn himself in. They also warned the public not to approach him and to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.

If anyone has information or possibly relevant doorbell or dashcam footage, they’re asked to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and reference incident E251166365. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
