According to Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy, a provincial budget that lacks surprises isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The Ontario government’s commitment to boost spending on some key municipal priorities seems encouraging, but Murphy feels the province’s 2026 budget announcement on Thursday was just more of the same for the Ottawa Valley.

She mentions that additional funding for primary care physicians might be one of the more noteworthy aspects mentioned in the budget, but Murphy acknowledges that it’s unclear what that will mean for Renfrew County and other rural areas where many residents still lack a family doctor.

There were also several missed chances for the province to support municipalities better, but Murphy believes existing agreements should keep funding flowing steadily for now.

While it may not have been an especially thrilling moment for Renfrew County, Murphy realizes that things could have turned out much worse.

Murphy intends to meet with Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Billy Denault soon to go over the details of the budget and discuss how the county can take advantage of what was revealed.
