[ad_1]Renfrew County took a major step forward on Friday with the announcement of a Request For Proposals for the four-laning of Highway 17 west of Renfrew. County Warden Jennifer Murphy spoke as MPP Ric Bresee, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, looked on.Pembroke - Recently, several dignitaries from provincial and municipal governments gathered to announce plans for twinning Highway 17 from Arnprior to Renfrew. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Billy Denault and Hastings Lennox-Addington MPP Ric Bresee joined local county representatives for the announcement on Friday. During this event, they formally issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) aimed at adding two more lanes to the 22.5 km stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway. This announcement is part of Ontario's $30 billion initiative to enhance highway infrastructure across the province. As a vital connection into the Upper Ottawa Valley, this project has been in planning since Mr. Denault’s predecessor John Yakabuski was in office. Mr. Bresee, who serves as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, expressed gratitude toward Mr. Denault for his efforts over the past year, emphasizing that his input is regularly acknowledged at Queen’s Park. Speaking to an audience of about two dozen people, Mr. Bresee highlighted that twinning will create numerous well-paying jobs during construction and will improve safety for drivers once it’s finished. “Again, I have to highlight the work of MPP Denault for his ongoing efforts with our ministry as we move forward with this project,” he remarked. The MPP mentioned that Ontario aims to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers costing $200 billion every year and noted that Hwy. 17 plays a significant role in this goal. “People don’t realize, gridlock costs Ontario upwards of $56 billion every year. It’s a cost we simply can’t afford,” he continued. “As we face these mounting economic uncertainties, it’s never been more important to invest in transportation infrastructure that will support our province for years-for decades to come.” County Warden Jennifer Murphy thanked the provincial government for their support in securing funding and described it as an incredible mid-winter surprise. She expressed deep appreciation for everyone involved in committing to this plan. “People across the Ottawa Valley have been advocating for improvements to Highway 17, including extending Highway 417, for many years,” she said. “Today’s news tells our residents that their voices have been heard and that their safety and future truly matter.” Warden Murphy pointed out how vital the Hwy. 17 corridor is for locals as it connects families, businesses, and communities throughout the Valley. “Unfortunately, it’s also a road where too many serious accidents have occurred. So first and foremost, this investment is about safety,” she stated. She added that safer infrastructure means fewer tragedies and greater reliability for first responders while providing peace of mind for travelers using it. “Reliable modern transportation is essential if rural and small communities are going to grow and compete,” she continued. “Today’s announcement gives residents and businesses confidence that this region is recognized and positioned for growth.” The warden wrapped up her comments by thanking Mr. Denault again for prioritizing regional needs at provincial discussions. “And today we are seeing results from those efforts,” she added. “You are a true champion for our county; we’re lucky to have you representing us at Queen’s Park.” Warden Murphy also acknowledged past efforts in securing funding over recent years while recognizing all those who contributed toward making this happen. “I want to recognize many municipal leaders-both past and present-as well as community advocates who’ve worked tirelessly on this issue over time,” she concluded. “Progress like this happens when people stay focused together long-term.” Mc Nab/Braeside Mayor Lori Hoddinott emphasized how crucial this highway is not just locally but also as part of Canada’s Trans-Canada route. "Recent tragedies along this corridor remind us why continuous safety improvements are so necessary," she said about maintaining focus on advancing this project within communities close by. "What takes place here has impacts beyond just our municipal borders," she added further expressing gratitude regarding today’s confirmation that progress would continue alongside municipalities’ commitment towards collaboration with provincial authorities moving ahead."Mayor Hoddinott pointed out how gradual changes can lead significantly towards meaningful improvement over time while looking forward continuing partnerships between local governance entities along with state agencies until full completion achieved.Renfrew Mayor Tom Sidney conveyed how impactful these announcements represent key milestones not only individually but collectively benefiting surrounding areas greatly welcoming such good news overall.
