Buchanan, a Douglas resident, has been a forestry advisor since 1989, and a public speaker on human connections to the surroundings and sustainability in agriculture. He has been operating a regenerative farming enterprise in Renfrew County since 2001. He has been the volunteer president of the Renfrew County department of the Nationwide Farmers Union since 2018 and president of the Ottawa Valley Meals Co-op since 2019.
