People in midwestern Ontario are wrapping up the year with a snowy situation.
Lake effect snow is still hammering the area for a third consecutive day, and Environment Canada has issued warnings for another 20 to 40 centimetres of snowfall expected from Wednesday into Thursday.
“Snow squalls are expected to be fairly stationary, bringing the potential for significant accumulating snow,” the national weather agency stated. “Winds have eased off and blowing snow is less of a concern.”
An orange-level snow squall warning is in effect for Huron County, Perth County, Grey County, southern Bruce County, and the Bruce Peninsula. A yellow-level snow squall warning applies to north Wellington County.
Travel conditions will remain extremely hazardous across the region, with many routes already considered impassable. Highway 21 between Amberley and Port Elgin has been closed since Monday, as well as Highway 4 between Wingham and Teeswater. Anyone who comes across a closed road is reminded not to go around the closure sign, as OPP warns that doing so is not only risky but could also lead to charges and fines. Earlier this week, a bus driver was reportedly caught doing just that twice in less than 24 hours on a road near Kincardine. The 45-year-old driver now faces two counts of driving on a closed highway, according to police.
