The teens involved in a police inquiry regarding claims that someone threatened them with a bat for not wearing masks in a Saugeen Shores grocery store earlier this year have shared their version of events.

According to court documents, police charged Piergiorgio Donnini, 56, of Saugeen Shores, with mischief on Jan. 6 for damaging a taillight; three counts of threatening bodily harm against three different individuals; and carrying a weapon-a baseball bat-intended for dangerous purposes.

The charges against Donnini, who is a familiar figure in Port Elgin’s business community, have yet to be proven in court.

Donnini’s attorney, Andrew Loucks, represented him during his initial court appearance via video at Walkerton’s Ontario Court of Justice on March 2. The case has been postponed until March 30.

Loucks declined to comment on behalf of Donnini due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

Liam and Emma Cawood mentioned in an interview earlier this year that they were out for ice cream when they entered the Independent grocery store in Saugeen Shores around 7:45 p. m. on Jan. 6. Their recounting of the events hasn’t been tested in court.

The teens explained they left their masks at home during their spontaneous trip. They also mentioned they decide whether to wear masks based on factors like how long they’ll be inside the store and how many other shoppers are present.

This was contrary to what Ontario law required at the beginning of January and still mandates today. Masks must be worn indoors at stores as part of public health measures aimed at curbing COVID-19 transmission. Breaking these rules can lead to an $880 fine. Provincial pandemic restrictions started easing at the end of January and many have since been lifted; however, Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, stated that mask requirements would remain until last.....s

Liam and Emma Cawood stated that a man began yelling at them for not wearing masks while they were waiting to pay for their ice cream in the grocery store. The man questioned why they weren’t wearing masks and insisted that everyone should wear one, according to Liam who is 19 years old...</s.',‘/strong>,‘/strong>,‘/strong>,opening envelope

“We’re like ‘Sorry we didn’t bring them.’ And he was like ‘That’s BS! You guys need to wear a mask,’” Liam recounted during an interview.

They completed their checkout while the man continued “yelling at us,” cursing them out as others nearby suggested he needed to calm down because his behavior was outrageous.

“‘He threatened them too,’” Emma said who is just sixteen years old.

“Yeah he told us ‘Alright step outside I’m going to bust your face,’” Liam recalled saying he responded with “Oh no thanks,” before quickly leaving.

Emma remembered hearing him call them cowards which she interpreted as meaning he thought they weren’t vaccinated.

In interviews afterward they stated they had both received two vaccine doses but were holding off on getting booster shots until feeling more assured about safety measures.

The teens headed outside towards their car.

Liam said “While I was pushing back my cart,” “he comes out walking toward me saying ‘Dude you got a problem?’ Like he wanted to fight me.” “I said ‘No I don’t have any problems with you just chill.’”

A person outside joined them as both urged the man again “to chill out and back off,” Liam reported.

The man then went back toward his car only to return wielding either a baseball bat or possibly an axe handle “and starts approaching us threateningly,” Liam added prompting his friend assisting him earlier leave while he hurried back toward his vehicle.

“All I’m trying do now is get away before something bad happens,” Liam explained adding “before I could even reach my car he’s cornering Emma right next door with that bat.. and begins cussing her out.”

“I’m not gonna say what he called me,” Emma responded nervously.”I asked if he planned on assaulting me and admitted yes.” He threw several other slurs her way.”

Liam asserted it seemed like this guy meant serious harm since he’d insulted her using words like “inconsiderate” followed by more profanities which led him finally deciding it was time leave telling him repeatedly simply “back off.” Eventually after threatening Emma further Adam relented “

“He swings that bat around as though ready strike her then turns smashing our taillight before speeding off.”
