On January 23, a piper led young flag bearers and local officials as some of the top curlers from around the globe entered The Plex in Port Elgin for the opening ceremonies of the Port Elgin Chrysler 23 Ontario Tankard and Scotties, sponsored by Bruce Power.

The Ontario Tankard is the men’s provincial championship for Southern Ontario, with the winner representing Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier in London, ON this March.
Meanwhile, the winner of the women’s championship earns a spot at next month’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kamloops, B. C.

For event spokesperson Dave Middleton, seeing nearly full stands during the opening ceremony was a testament to months of effort by about 240 volunteers. He noted that it marked just the beginning of an exciting week for curling.

“We have five – or is it eight – of the top 50 men’s teams in the world competing here this week, so good luck trying to pick a winner,” Middleton said before festivities began.
“On the women’s side, obviously Rachel Homan is favored and rightly so – she’s among the best women’s curlers globally – and she mentioned to me that this will be her toughest challenge at an Ontario championship yet if she can pull it off since many teams have really raised their game this year,” Middleton shared.

Some of the finest men’s and women’s curlers graced The Plex in Saugeen Shores on January 23 for opening ceremonies kicking off the week-long Port Elgin Chrysler 23 Ontario Tankard and Scotties, presented by Bruce Power.

As round robin play begins, Glen Howard emerges as a favorite among men. The four-time world champion returns after knee surgery during his off-season.
Mike Mc Ewen and John Epping are also big names to watch among other skilled skips like Pat Ferris, Sam Mooibroek, and Jason Camm.

Homan and Hollie Duncan lead contenders for the Ontario women’s championship as they aim for a place at next month’s Tournament of Hearts in Kamloops, B. C.

The Tankard and Scotties events are organized under Curl ON’s supervision and usually take place together three out of four years within an Olympic cycle.
Middleton praised Curl ON’s decision to host this year’s event again in Port Elgin thanks to hard work from their organizing committee.

In her first match, Rachel Homan from Ottawa Curling Club took control by stealing four points in the fifth end en route to a solid 10-5 victory over Susan Froud from Alliston Curling Club.
Other winners included Hollie Duncan, Isabelle Ladouceur, Carly Howard, and Lauren Mann.

The round robin matches along with any necessary tiebreakers will continue until Friday at 9:30 a. m., 2:30 p. m., and 7:30 p. m.
Semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, January 28th at those same times.
The Ontario Special O’s Championship will take place Saturday at 12:50 p. m.
Finals happen on Sunday, January 29th with women’s finals set for 10:30 a. m. followed by men’s finals at 3 p. m.

Two games will be streamed live during each draw at http://www. curlontv. ca/
