Drivers passing through downtown Port Elgin should prepare for some delays starting next week.

The first phase of the Ministry of Transportation’s Connecting Link Program kicks off on Monday, focusing on road improvements along Goderich Street (Highway 21). The section between Concession 6 and Concession 10 will see resurfacing, restoration of its historic brick intersections, and some minor upgrades to underground infrastructure.

This initial phase includes replacing underground services and interlocking bricks at the intersections of Gustavus Street and Green Street.

Following that, the second phase will start on May 19. This phase will also involve service replacements and interlocking brick work at Mill Street and Elgin Street intersections, along with new asphalt being laid between Market Street and Emma Street.

Each of these first two phases is expected to take around four to five weeks to finish.

The goal is to complete the downtown work before the busy tourism season starts.

A schedule for the remaining three phases hasn’t been set yet. Phases 3 through 5 will include paving and replacing underground infrastructure along Goderich Street from Ivings Drive to Concession 6, from Emma Street to Concession 6, and from Market Street to Concession 10. The public will be informed once specific start dates are confirmed.

Sections of Goderich Street will be closed as crews install underground services. Detour routes are in place to help drivers navigate around the construction. Pedestrians can still access downtown businesses during this time, and alternative parking areas will be available.
