On Tuesday, Hamilton’s Sebastian Halmagean took his final journey as members of the armed forces, police, and community came together to honor the life of a soldier who lost his life while serving in Latvia.

The Canadian Armed Forces reported that Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, who was part of the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, passed away on Thursday near Riga during his first overseas deployment.

Originally from Hamilton, Halmagean had been with the military for nearly three years.

“Today, members of Durham Regional Police Service stood in salute to honour Canadian Armed Forces member Gunner Sebastian Halmagean,” Durham Regional Police stated after officers paid their respects along the Highway of Heroes from the armed forces base in Trenton to Toronto. “We thank Gunner Halmagean for his service and sacrifice, and extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and fellow service members. Lest we forget.”

Halmagean was assigned to the 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support), Royal Canadian Artillery, which is part of the 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade based at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in New Brunswick.

“The passing of Gunner Halmagean is a loss deeply felt for the Canadian Armed Forces. On behalf of all our members, I offer my heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones and those who served alongside him,” Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan said in a news release from the military.

Latvia hosts a multinational troop deployment aimed at deterring Russian aggression along Europe’s eastern border. It is one among several NATO battle brigades stationed in eastern Europe.

Canada leads this deployment with around 2,000 troops on site.
