A teenager from Pickering, who was under a court order to avoid counterfeit money, has been charged with using fake cash at a store in Pickering City Centre last month.

According to police, the youth made a purchase at Shop401 in the mall on February 5 using counterfeit bills. Staff discovered the money was fake shortly after checking the register.

Investigators managed to identify the suspect and set up for him to turn himself in. At the time of his arrest, he was already prohibited by court orders from possessing counterfeit currency or visiting the Shops at Pickering City Centre shopping mall.

The teen faces charges of fraud under $5,000, uttering counterfeit currency, and multiple counts of breaching an undertaking as well as release orders.

He is being held for a bail hearing.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are urged to contact D/Cst. Kane of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5371.
