Don’t be alarmed if you see something that looks like smoke rising from the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.
Some posted concerned videos showing what looks like a puff of smoke coming from the station over the weekend.
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) says staff took a unit off-line for a brief maintenance outage.
It wasn’t smoke, it was steam.
As staff work to bring the unit back online you may notice more steam in the next few days.
Statement from OPG:
The steam visible on the weekend was a result of staff at Pickering taking a unit off-line for a brief maintenance outage. Residents of Pickering will be familiar with the fact that these kinds of steam releases are part of the normal shut-down and start-up process and have no impact on the environment.
As the unit begins its warm-up to return to service today and over the next few days, people may again notice steam. Again, this is a normal part of the process, with no impact on the environment.
Ontario Power Generation has advised that Pickering Unit 4 is being brought back online following the maintenance outage.
As a result, over the next few days, near-site residents may witness large amounts of steam. This steam is part of the normal shut down and start-up…
