The Durham Catholic District School Board has officially started construction on a new elementary school in Pickering as of Friday morning.

Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, who also serves as the MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge, joined Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe and school board chair Monique Forster at the ceremony to celebrate the launch of Seaton #1 Catholic Elementary School.

Bethlenfalvy and his government have allocated $33.8 million to the Durham Catholic District School Board for this new facility, which will create 622 student spaces and 88 licensed childcare spaces.

“It is important now more than ever that we continue to invest in our students,” said Bethlenfalvy. “This $33.8 million investment in the new Seaton Catholic School is a part of our government’s plan to build better schools and critical infrastructure as we continue to grow as a province, ensuring that our youth are well-equipped for the future.”

Education Minister Paul Calandra mentioned that the new school will provide an “inspiring learning environment that helps students prepare for the jobs of tomorrow” by equipping them with essential tools for success.

Forster expressed her appreciation towards the province for supporting Catholic education in Pickering. “The investment in Seaton #1 Catholic School marks an exciting milestone in our shared vision to provide modern learning environments to support student success.”

This funding is part of the provincial government’s commitment to invest around $23 billion over the next decade for school construction, renewal, and improvement projects.

Since 2018, Ontario has contributed more than $6 billion toward significant capital projects, including building 173 new schools, making 122 permanent additions or renovations to existing buildings, and adding over 9,600 new licensed childcare spaces within schools.

For the upcoming 2025-26 school year, the province will be providing $1.4 billion to school boards specifically for renewal initiatives.

“The City of Pickering is proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of Seaton’s first Catholic school. As Seaton continues to experience tremendous growth, this investment ensures that families have access to quality, faith-based education close to home,” said Ashe. “It reflects our shared vision of building a complete, vibrant, and inclusive community for generations to come.”

The new Seaton #1 Catholic Elementary School will be situated at 2460 Hibiscus Drive in Pickering’s expanding Seaton community.
