Pickering’s City Centre mall was closed and shoppers were evacuated on Saturday following a watermain break under the main atrium, causing serious damage to the ground floor.

Emergency crews arrived at the Shops at Pickering City Centre early Saturday, prompting the mall’s closure as a safety measure.

Pickering councillor Maurice Brenner mentioned that the city’s buildings division was notified and a fire watch was put in place due to the lack of running water in the facility.

The repairs to the watermain will require digging up part of the floor, he noted.

The Shops at City Centre announced on social media that the main shopping area will stay closed throughout the holiday weekend and is set to reopen on Tuesday.

“We appreciate your patience.”

Stores with external entrances or those located in standalone buildings, such as Cineplex theatres, Jack Astor’s, Dave’s Hot Chicken, State & Main, Moxies, Farm Boy and East Side Mario’s, were able to resume operations on Sunday.
