Pickering’s City Centre mall was closed and shoppers were evacuated on Saturday due to a water main break under the main atrium, causing serious structural damage to the ground floor.
Emergency services arrived at the Shops at Pickering City Centre on Saturday morning, leading to the mall’s closure as a safety measure.
According to Pickering councillor Maurice Brenner, the city’s buildings division was notified and a fire watch was put in place because of the lack of running water in the building.
Repairs to the water main will require digging up part of the floor, he mentioned.
The Shops at City Centre announced via social media that the main retail area will remain closed throughout the holiday weekend and is set to reopen on Tuesday.
“We appreciate your patience.”
Stores with outside entrances or standalone buildings, like Cineplex theatres, Jack Astor’s, Dave’s Hot Chicken, State & Main, Moxies, Farm Boy and East Side Mario’s, were able to open for business on Sunday.
