Police report that three individuals have died and two others are in critical condition following a head-on crash on Highway 7 close to Pickering on Tuesday evening.

The accident occurred near Concession Road 6. Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Toronto detachment arrived at the scene around 7 p. m., according to a news release issued on Wednesday.

“It’s absolutely horrific knowing that three people have lost their lives in a very preventable crash, as we’re trying to understand what the circumstances were that led to this collision,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

He mentioned that an investigation is ongoing, but at this moment, speed, weather, and alcohol do not seem to be contributing factors.

A vehicle carrying four people traveling westbound veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another vehicle going eastbound, stated Schmidt.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle, an 82-year-old woman from Port Perry, was pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed.

Two female passengers in the back seats of the westbound car-a 63-year-old from Markham and a 68-year-old from Scarborough-were also declared dead at the site of the accident.

The driver of the westbound vehicle and another passenger were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Schmidt noted that it appeared everyone was wearing seatbelts during the crash.

He urged anyone who may have witnessed the event or has dashcam footage from that area around that time to get in touch with the OPP.

Witness Describes ‘Haunting’ Scene

Belinda La Belle-Logan, who runs a garden center and equestrian facility near where the accident took place, said she heard a “huge” boom on Tuesday and immediately ran out with her husband to see what happened at the “haunting” scene.

“You couldn’t see the front end of the car. There was debris across all four lanes,” she recalled. “I didn’t sleep last night. It’s something I’ll probably never forget.”

La Belle-Logan shared how she tried to assist the driver of the westbound vehicle who was unconscious on the ground intermittently.

But sadly, there was no hope for those sitting in back when they checked on them, she added.

“I checked for a pulse; there were no signs. So yeah, that was hard to take in.”...***
