A 44-year-old garbage truck driver from North York has lost his life after a single-vehicle accident on Highway 401 near Pickering on Sunday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police report that the crash took place in the westbound lanes of the highway, close to Port Union Road, just before 9 a. m.

Authorities say the driver was thrown from the vehicle and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A passenger in the truck sustained minor injuries.

Investigators have not provided details about what caused the crash but confirmed that no other vehicles were involved.

The westbound collector lanes are expected to remain shut down until at least 3 p. m. for further investigation.
